Overview

Draw This, Then Die! (Japanese title: Kore Kaite Shine) adapts Minoru Toyoda's manga, serialized in Shogakukan's Monthly Shōnen Sunday since November 2021. The anime is produced by Shin-Ei Animation and directed by Hiroaki Akagi, and aired 12 episodes in Nippon TV's Friday Anime Night block from 3 July to 25 September 2026, while Crunchyroll streams it internationally.

OtaHub's take

Lead character Ai Yasumi is a first-year high school student living on Izu Ōshima island who was simply a devoted manga reader. A turning point leads her to start creating her own work, and the series follows her through the first hurdles of telling stories in pictures. Rather than romanticizing passion, it speaks frankly about self-doubt, loneliness and the competitive pressure creators face.

The original manga won the 16th Manga Taishō in 2023 and shared the 70th Shogakukan Manga Award in 2024. Right after episode 12 aired, the producers announced Season 2 with a new image of Ai Yasumi and Pokota, while the air date has not been revealed. OtaHub notes that confirming a new season this quickly shows notable confidence in a quiet slice-of-life anime.

Verdict

For viewers who enjoy stories about creative work, a gentle pace with humor mixed in, and especially anyone who has ever thought about drawing their own comics. Those looking for action or rapid-fire plot twists will probably find it too slow. For those who finished Season 1, this is a sensible moment to read the manga while waiting for Season 2.
