Overview
We Are Aliens (Wareware wa Uchūjin) is an animated feature written, directed, storyboarded and edited by Kōhei Kadowaki. It is produced by Japan's NOTHING NEW in collaboration with the French studio Miyu Productions, and opened in Japanese cinemas on 25 September 2026.
OtaHub's take
The story follows two boys, Tsubasa and Gyōtarō, who grew close in elementary school. Jealousy and misunderstandings gradually pull them apart. Years later, when old memories return, both must face what happened between them. Ryōta Bandō voices the adult Tsubasa, Amane Okayama voices Gyōtarō, and Ten Yamasaki voices Konatsu.
The newest trailer focuses on ordinary childhood games and conversations set against an incident that makes those memories hard to revisit, with adieu's song "Sasakure" as the soundtrack. The score is by Yaffle. According to OtaHub's article, the sense of slipping away from an ordinary world grows as the story goes deeper.
Before its Japanese release the film screened at the Directors' Fortnight of the Cannes Film Festival (14 May 2026) and in competition at Annecy 2026, then went on to Ottawa, Melbourne and New Zealand, with Busan scheduled for October 2026. It is NOTHING NEW's first original feature film.
