Shadow of the Road has moved from November 12, 2026 to March 10, 2027 while Another Angle Games works on its combat systems. For a turn-based RPG built around a party working together, those battles will have a considerable influence on whether its journey remains enjoyable.

What needs more work in Shadow of the Road?
Another Angle Games and publisher Owlcat Games say the extra time will let them address remaining issues and polish the game. Their announcement singles out combat balance and party progression.
The team wants positioning, initiative and ability choices to matter in every encounter. Battles should reward planning and give players decisions to make, rather than letting one successful approach carry them through every fight.
Character development is also being adjusted to encourage experimentation with skills and changes in tactics. As the party grows stronger, new skill choices should give players more ways to handle the challenges ahead.

What brings samurai, spirits and machines together?
Shadow of the Road takes place in an alternate Japan in 1868, during a war between the Tokugawa shogunate and the Emperor’s forces. Old temples stand alongside steam-powered machines, while supernatural beings share the world with warriors and spies.
The story follows the rōnin Satoru and Akira on a mission to protect a boy with immense, uncontrollable powers. Other characters join along the way, and player choices can build relationships, break friendships or repair family ties.
Each party member has their own skills and motivations. Improving character development therefore has a direct bearing on the game’s appeal: a new companion needs to be interesting for the way they fight as well as their story.
Can you try it before March?
A demo is available from the Shadow of the Road Steam page. The full game is planned for Steam, GOG and Epic Games Store.
The demo offers a way to get familiar with the setting and party controls. Combat and character development are still being revised, so it should not be treated as the final state of the release version.
OtaHub’s take
Future previews will be most useful if they show how battles have changed: where characters should stand, who should move first and how abilities work together. Those details would explain what the extra development time is delivering more clearly than another look at the scenery.
