The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto) officially returns for Season 3 in October 2026, running into 2027. No longer confined behind the vermilion walls of the inner palace, Maomao and Jinshi’s new journey expands to the entire capital and neighboring lands, where political conspiracies and sophisticated poisoning cases begin to emerge.
Broadcast Plan and Two Consecutive Cours
According to producer TOHO Animation and studio OLM, Kusuriya no Hitorigoto Season 3 will premiere its first cour on October 2, 2026. To ensure the quality of the visuals, costumes and polish of every sakuga frame, the second part (cour 2) is expected to follow in April 2027.
After the shocking events of the previous season, Maomao temporarily returns to her familiar work at the apothecary shop in the pleasure district. However, the peace doesn’t last long as a series of strange phenomena, poisonings of unknown origin and ghostly rumors begin spreading through every corner of the capital.
A Turning Point Beyond the Palace Walls: A Cross-Border Poisoning Case
The biggest highlight of Season 3 is its expanded world-building. While the first two seasons focused on rivalries for favor and underhanded schemes deep inside the palace, the new chapter thrusts Maomao into complex diplomatic cases involving a delegation of foreign envoys.
A mysterious omen tied to an ancient curse, along with extremely rare imported medicinal ingredients, forces the poison-obsessed apothecary to draw on all of her vast knowledge, keen sense of smell and sharp powers of observation to follow even the smallest clues.
Emotional Developments and Maomao and Jinshi’s Bumpy Relationship
Beyond the detective work, the main draw remains the interaction between Maomao and Jinshi. As Jinshi’s identity as the Emperor’s younger brother becomes increasingly clear, along with the heavy responsibility of state affairs, the gap in status between the two grows more apparent.
While Jinshi keeps trying to protect her and express his sincere feelings, Maomao’s practical nature and habit of avoiding trouble with powerful people create situations that are both funny and emotionally resonant. The combination of director Norihiro Naganuma and composer Satoru Kousaki promises to keep captivating anime fans around the world.
