Story

An obstetrician and his patient are reincarnated as twins born to the idol Ai Hoshino, keeping their past-life memories. After their mother is murdered, they enter the entertainment industry with their own aims, while the story explores both the glamour and dark corners of idol culture, from image pressure to the influence of social media.

Ai Hoshino resonates beyond fiction: in a 2023 Benesse survey of over 18,000 Japanese children, she ranked third among most admired figures, behind only "friend" and "mother".

Behind The Scenes

Doga Kobo produced season 1 with a 90-minute premiere, and the opening song "Idol" by YOASOBI was a major success on global charts. The manga won the 2021 Next Manga Award in the print category and was nominated for the Manga Taishō and the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize.

The live-action version on Amazon Prime Video set a record for domestic viewers for a Prime original in Japan within its first 30 days, showing the brand's reach.

Experience

Visuals and staging

The 90-minute premiere sets the tone for the whole series: strong emotion, layered staging and well-invested stage performances. Doga Kobo maintains quality across seasons with performance sequences and film-set scenes that have their own editing rhythm.

Plot and ending

The biggest controversy lies in the source: the manga's ending divided readers, many saying the final chapters were rushed and poorly developed, while Aka Akasaka maintains the ending was carefully planned and he is satisfied with the execution. Anime viewers should know this since season 4 will adapt the finale.

Strengths

  • A striking 90-minute opener
  • Entertainment industry themes exploring both light and dark sides
  • YOASOBI's "Idol" was a global success
  • Adapted across formats including live-action series and film

Weaknesses

  • The manga's ending is seen by many readers as rushed
  • A heavy tone with many dark themes
  • Pacing and detail can be hard to follow for newcomers
