Battle Through the Heavens (Doupo Cangqiong) review: a novel by Tiancan Tudou, donghua across five seasons since 2017 on Tencent Penguin Pictures, following Xiao Yan's cultivation and revenge on the Dou Qi continent.
Overview
Xiao Yan was once a prodigy of Dou Qi cultivation, but his power mysteriously stalled after his mother's death. When he finds an ancient ring holding the soul of Yao Chen, a legendary alchemist, he starts training again to reclaim his honour and answer those who looked down on him.
OtaHub's take
The series adapts Doupo Cangqiong, the xianxia web novel by Tiancan Tudou and one of China's most influential cultivation stories. Its core appeal is a clear Dou Qi ranking system and a continent full of rival factions and sects.
The donghua began airing on January 7, 2017 via Tencent Penguin Pictures. Because the original first season looked dated, the team remade it as "Battle Through the Heavens: Origin" (July 17–24, 2022); season 5 started on July 31, 2022, produced by Shanghai Motion Magic.
Beyond the donghua, there is a 2018 live-action series directed by Yu Rongguang and starring Leo Wu, broadcast on Hunan TV.
