Overview
Galaxy Express 999 began as a manga by Leiji Matsumoto, serialized in Weekly Shōnen King from 24 January 1977. The orphan boy Tetsuro Hoshino boards a steam train that flies between the stars with a mysterious woman named Maetel, hoping to reach a planet that gives away mechanical bodies for eternal life. Every stop is a different society, and Tetsuro slowly begins to question what he actually wants.
OtaHub's take
Toei Animation's TV anime aired from 14 September 1978 for 113 episodes, with Nobutaka Nishizawa as chief director. It was followed by the 1979 film and Adieu Galaxy Express 999 in 1981, both directed by Rintaro, and then Eternal Fantasy in 1998. The episodes are remembered for their lonely atmosphere: immortality, class, technology and memory are weighed at each stop.
On 25 July 2026 Toei Animation announced it is producing a new theatrical anime film, with Rintaro in charge of the story draft. As far as is known, the full title, director, cast and release date have not been announced, and it is unclear whether it is a remake or a continuation. It would be the franchise's first new theatrical film since Eternal Fantasy.
Verdict
For newcomers, the 1979 film and the TV series are the entry points most often mentioned. Viewers used to modern anime may need time to adjust to the slow pace, but they get a science-fiction work that asks questions about being human rather than leaning on action.
