Toei Animation has officially confirmed it is producing a new theatrical anime film based on Galaxy Express 999, Leiji Matsumoto's classic science-fiction franchise, nearly 50 years after the original film released in 1979.
Rintaro, who directed the 1979 Galaxy Express 999 film, Adieu Galaxy Express 999, and the Galaxy Express 999: Emeraldas: The Eternal Warrior special, is in charge of the original story draft for the new film.

This will be the franchise's first new theatrical film since Galaxy Express 999: Eternal Fantasy in 1998, marking a return to theaters after 28 years. The original story follows orphaned boy Tetsuro as he travels with the mysterious Maetel aboard a space train, hoping to obtain an immortal mechanical body.
The film's full title, voice cast, director, screenwriter and exact release date have not yet been announced. OtaHub will update this page once Toei Animation shares more details.
