Overview
Gintama is Hideaki Sorachi's manga, which began in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump at the end of 2003. The story is set in a fictional Edo where the alien Amanto have arrived, forcing the shogunate into submission and banning the carrying of swords. Gintoki Sakata, a veteran who once fought the Amanto, now scrapes by taking odd jobs at the Yorozuya with teenager Shinpachi and the alien girl Kagura.
OtaHub's take
The anime began with an OVA screened at Jump Festa, and the TV series then aired from April 2006, running through several parts for a total of 367 episodes until October 2018. Sunrise handled the early period before Bandai Namco Pictures took over in 2015. Beyond TV there were films in 2010 and 2013, and Gintama: The Very Final reached theaters in January 2021, closing the main storyline. In 2025, the spin-off 3-nen Z-gumi Ginpachi-sensei was also adapted as a TV series.
Gintama's appeal lies in its dizzying shifts in tone: one episode can parody other Jump manga or break the fourth wall, while the next opens a tragic battle arc. For the anime's 20th anniversary, the film Gintama The Movie: Yoshiwara in Flames, revisiting the Yoshiwara arc, opened in Japan on 13 February 2026. At a stage event for the film in Tokyo on 26 September 2026, in a video message to the audience, Sorachi admitted he once thought the anime would flop because its particular humor would be hard to bring to the screen.
Verdict
Gintama suits viewers who enjoy satire packed with Japanese pop culture references and are ready for heavy action and emotional arcs. The large episode count may intimidate newcomers, but the many standalone episodes of the early period allow a gradual start before the long arcs.
