Overview
Cyberpunk 2077 is CD Projekt Red's open-world action RPG, inspired by Mike Pondsmith's Cyberpunk tabletop RPG, released on 10 December 2020. It is set in Night City in 2077, a megacity ruled by corporations. You play V, a mercenary whose failed heist leaves a chip holding the consciousness of Johnny Silverhand, the rebel rocker played by Keanu Reeves, stuck in their head. From there V has to find a way to survive before Johnny gradually takes over the body.
OtaHub's take
Its launch was one of the industry's biggest debacles: severe technical problems, especially on PS4 and Xbox One, led Sony to pull the game from the PlayStation Store until June 2021. CD Projekt Red spent years patching it and released PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions in 2022. The Netflix anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners that same year brought players back. Update 2.0 in September 2023 rebuilt the skill trees, cyberware, police and vehicle combat, changing almost the entire feel of play.
Released alongside Update 2.0, the Phantom Liberty expansion (26 September 2023, on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only) is a spy story set in Dogtown, a new walled-off district of Night City. V teams up with Solomon Reed, an agent played by Idris Elba, on a mission to rescue President Rosalind Myers after her plane goes down in Dogtown. The Ultimate Edition bundles the base game and the expansion, and it is also what arrived on Nintendo Switch 2 when the console launched on 5 June 2025.
Verdict
Today's Cyberpunk 2077 is very different from its launch state and suits players who like story-heavy RPGs, varied builds and a densely detailed city to explore. If you buy it, play it with Phantom Liberty, the most tightly directed content in the game. Players on PS4 or Xbox One should note that the expansion is not available on those consoles.
