Overview

Marvel Rivals is a third-person team shooter developed and operated by NetEase Games in partnership with Marvel Games, launched free-to-play on 6 December 2024 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Two teams of six pick from a familiar Marvel cast such as Spider-Man, Iron Man, Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch, then fight over objectives on maps inspired by locations across the Marvel universe.

OtaHub's take

Characters fall into three roles, Vanguard, Duelist and Strategist, covering durability, damage and support. The game's signature is its Team-Up abilities: when certain pairs or groups of characters play together, they gain extra combined skills, which encourages players to think carefully about team composition. Parts of the environment can be destroyed, so the terrain keeps changing during a match and opens new angles of approach.

The game receives steady seasonal updates with new heroes, maps, events and balance passes. As OtaHub reported, the 27 August 2026 patch opened a limited Infinity Saga store tab collecting MCU-inspired costume bundles, tied to the Avengers: Endgame Encore theatrical re-release, alongside new costumes for Peni Parker, Angela and Squirrel Girl and fixes to Team-Up abilities. This busy update rhythm keeps players around for the long run, but it also means following frequent balance changes.

Verdict

A good fit for Marvel fans who enjoy fast team games where coordination matters more than individual skill. Being free, it is easy to try with friends, but players should be prepared for paid cosmetic stores and a fairly competitive ranked mode. Anyone familiar with other hero shooters will settle in quickly, while newcomers may want to start in the Strategist role to learn the maps.
