Overview

Stardew Valley is a farming sim developed solo by Eric Barone, known as ConcernedApe, over roughly five years, doing the art, code and music himself. It launched on PC on 26 February 2016. The main character, tired of an office job at the Joja corporation, inherits their grandfather's overgrown plot in the small town of Pelican Town and starts a new life with a few hand-me-down tools and a little savings.

OtaHub's take

Play revolves around the four seasons: growing crops by season, raising animals, fishing, foraging and fighting through the mines for minerals. Alongside that is town life, with dozens of residents who have their own schedules, stories and the option of marriage. The long-term goal is restoring the Community Center through collection bundles, or siding with Joja instead. Multiplayer co-op was added in 2018, turning the farm into a project for a whole group of friends.

What sets Stardew Valley apart is its long, free support. Chucklefish originally published some console versions, and Barone later took back the publishing rights. Update 1.6 arrived on PC in March 2024 and on consoles and mobile in November 2024 with a large amount of new content. In late 2025 the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition appeared as a free upgrade for Switch owners, adding mouse controls and four-player split screen.

Verdict

A safe pick for anyone who wants a relaxing game played in short days that still has clear goals, and it is especially good with friends or a partner. It runs well on almost any device, phones included. Players who need fast pacing or action challenge will find it slow, even though the mines offer some combat.
