Blizzard has confirmed Diablo 5 and is targeting a spring 2029 launch, but the arrival of a new game doesn’t mean Diablo 4 will be left behind. Blizzard says Diablo 4’s seasons can continue after Diablo 5 releases, as long as the community remains invested in the game.
After Diablo 5 was announced at BlizzCon 2026, the future of Diablo 4 quickly became a hot topic among players. Diablo 4 only launched in 2023, while its sequel has been confirmed for 2029. That led many to wonder whether Blizzard would move all of its resources to Diablo 5 once the new game arrives.

According to Diablo 4 game director Brent Gibson, Blizzard still wants to keep Diablo 4’s seasons going after Diablo 5 releases. The key condition is that the community keeps playing and caring about the game.
This approach isn’t entirely new for the Diablo franchise. Blizzard has continued supporting older entries even after a new game appeared. Diablo 2 and Diablo 3 both maintained their own communities for a long time, with seasonal content playing an important role in keeping players coming back.
So Diablo 5 doesn’t necessarily have to completely replace Diablo 4. The two games can coexist and serve different groups of players within the Diablo ecosystem.
However, players should distinguish between seasonal content and large-scale expansions. Blizzard has confirmed that Lord of Hatred will be the last planned expansion for Diablo 4. After that, the game’s development will focus more on seasons and content added during live operation.
That means Diablo 4 can keep receiving updates, but it won’t necessarily follow the same development model as before. Instead of continually releasing big expansions, Blizzard may focus on creating new seasons, adding systems, gear and changes for its current players.
Before Diablo 5 arrives, Diablo 4 still has plenty of development plans. Blizzard has announced that the Amazon will return to Diablo 4 in the first half of 2027. The class first appeared in Diablo 2 and will be redesigned to fit Diablo 4’s combat system.

Alongside the new class, Blizzard is also continuing to expand systems related to seasons, gear and character customization. This content is designed to create more build options and change how players approach each season.
Meanwhile, Diablo 5 is expected to launch in spring 2029. The new game is set about 100 years after the events of Diablo 4, opening a new era in the story of Sanctuary.
The fairly long gap between the two games also lets Blizzard keep supporting Diablo 4 for years before moving on to the next chapter. So players won’t necessarily have to give up on Diablo 4 as soon as Diablo 5 arrives.
Even so, Blizzard hasn’t yet announced its full plans for Diablo 4 beyond 2029. Specific content, update frequency and the scale of future seasons may change depending on the state of the community.
For now, Blizzard’s direction suggests Diablo 5 will be the franchise’s new chapter, while Diablo 4 continues with a seasonal system for its current community. As long as players stay active, Diablo 4’s Sanctuary won’t end its journey even when the next game arrives.
