JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Spirit Review: A Pretty, Hands-Off Auto-Battler

The first official JoJo mobile game released worldwide has gorgeous Stand presentation and a 50+ character roster, but its core is a low-input auto-battler and the gacha asks for a lot of duplicates.

Quick verdict
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Spirit suits fans who want to collect Stands and relive familiar fights in 3D. The presentation and the 50+ character roster are big pluses, but battles mostly play themselves once you set the lineup, and the gacha wants many duplicates to fully build one character. OtaHub score: 7.8/10, Decent.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Spirit is a free mobile game that launched on August 13, 2026 on iOS and Android in every region except Japan, mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau. KLab Games and Wanda Cinemas Games built it on the anime, with more than 50 characters from Phantom Blood to Stone Ocean. According to Outlook Respawn, it is the first official JoJo mobile game released worldwide. The real question is whether an anime gacha game plays better than it looks, and OtaHub's answer is: somewhat, as long as you know what kind of game you are installing.

How it plays: an auto-battler, not turn-based tactics

This is the easiest thing to misread. Golden Spirit does not let you command each turn. You pick a team, place it on a multi-tile grid, and the battle plays out by itself. The tactics live in the preparation: each character's range, skill synergy across JoJo generations, changing weather and a Rush burst when the lineup chains its ultimates properly. According to JoJo Wiki, the game has 18 battlefield environments and six combat styles (defense, assault, agility, ranged, special, support), each with its own passive.

That puts it closer to a collect-and-arrange game than something like XCOM. Game8 files the combat under familiar autobattler territory but praises how much preparation matters, while Hardcore Droid criticises exactly that: once a fight starts you are mostly watching, with only speed-up and auto options. Both are right, depending on what you want from a mobile game. OtaHub leans toward the positive side for players used to the genre, because weather and positioning are enough for a well-built team to beat a stronger but carelessly assembled one.

Story and modes: a replay more than a retelling

According to JoJo Wiki, the main story runs 16 chapters adapting Golden Wind (Vento Aureo), mixing 3D-model story scenes with star-rated battles. Beyond that there is an arena, ranked PvP, the Hall of Trials with World Bosses, guilds and events. The launch window came with a story event following Jotaro in Stardust Crusaders, mini-games and an SSR Jotaro Kujo banner (per Pocket Gamer).

The weakness is that the story tells you nothing new. Hardcore Droid says the campaign retreads familiar anime moments, and Game8 notes it assumes you already know JoJo, so newcomers will struggle. For fans there is an upside: meeting a classic moment again in 3D is fun. For someone who has not watched the show, the game cannot introduce the series.

Visuals and sound: where the game is strongest

Characters use 3D models with Live2D for interaction scenes, and the camera moves freely through 360 degrees when Stands attack. Game8 scores visuals 9/10 and audio 9/10, praising the character models and voice acting. The soundtrack is by Yugo Kanno, who also scored Stardust Crusaders and The JoJoLands (per the official App Store description). Hardcore Droid likewise praises the Stand attacks but finds some character models in story scenes lacking weight.

Gacha and the character-building loop: pretty but duplicate-hungry

There are three rarities: R, SR and SSR. According to JoJo Wiki and Hideout Gacha, base rates are 2% SSR, 20% SR and 78% R, with a 60-pull guarantee: event banners guarantee the featured SSR, standard banners a random SSR. There is also a pick-your-own reward at 180 pulls on the standard banner. These figures are community compiled, so read the in-game rate table before pulling, since the publisher can change them.

More important than the rates is duplicates. Game8 says fully building a character can take up to 11 copies, on top of progression layers such as Stand awakening, skill upgrades, gear forging and character ascension. It also mentions time gates that interrupt the flow. Free play works, but do not expect to collect and max every favourite in a few weeks.

Strengths and weaknesses

Strengths

  • 3D models, Live2D and Stand scenes that feel like JoJo, with music by Yugo Kanno.
  • 50+ characters across six generations, enough to mix teams from several parts.
  • Weather, range and Rush give lineup-building some depth.
  • Free to play, with a 60-pull guarantee and published rates.

Weaknesses

  • Once a fight starts you mostly watch, with little to influence.
  • The story revisits old scenes and is hard to follow for non-fans.
  • Fully building a character takes many duplicates, with time-gated progress.
  • Hardcore Droid notes several characters were missing from the launch roster.

What critics say

The game is young, so there is no big aggregate yet. Metacritic has no Metascore because it has 2 reviews (it needs 4), both at 80: GamingonPhone praised the mix of strategy and automated combat with good 3D visuals, and Game8 called it a well-rounded adaptation. Game8 (Andre Dumo, August 14, 2026) gave 8/10, split as story 7, gameplay 8, visuals 9, audio 9 and value for money 7. Hardcore Droid (Jacklyn Montero, August 29, 2026) gave only 2.5/5, criticising heavily automated combat, a roster missing a few faces at launch and a story that repeats old scenes.

US App Store users rate it 3.95/5 across 887 ratings (read October 3, 2026, version 1.0.4). OtaHub could not verify a Google Play rating. A 7.8 sits between the two critics: closer to Game8 because the presentation is real, while weighing Hardcore Droid's complaint about how little you control.

Who should play JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Spirit?

Play it if you are a JoJo fan who likes collecting Stands, arranging teams and rewatching classic fights in good 3D, especially if daily-login gacha routines are already familiar.

Think twice if you want to control every turn yourself, dislike gacha, or have not seen JoJo and hope the game will tell the story. For players after deep tactics, a genuinely turn-based game will fit better.

Frequently asked questions

When did JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Spirit launch, and is it available in my country?

It launched on August 13, 2026 on iOS and Android in every region except Japan, mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau. The App Store currently lists English as the only language.

Is Golden Spirit turn-based or an auto-battler?

It is a tactical auto-battler. You build a team and place it on a multi-tile grid, then the fight runs on its own; what you plan in advance is weather, skill synergy and Rush timing.

How many characters are there, and from which parts?

More than 50 characters spanning Phantom Blood to Stone Ocean (six generations of JoJo), split into R, SR and SSR rarity.

Does the gacha have pity, and how much do I need to spend?

Yes. According to JoJo Wiki and Hideout Gacha, base rates are 2% SSR, 20% SR and 78% R, with a guaranteed SSR every 60 pulls (event banners guarantee the featured character). Game8 notes that fully building one character can take up to 11 copies, so free play works but is slow.

Where can I play it, and does it cost anything?

It is free on the App Store and Google Play with in-app purchases. The iOS build is about 1.9 GB and rated 9+.
