Minecraft has officially announced The Sift, its fourth dimension after more than 14 years. The area will appear in Minecraft Dungeons II before arriving in Minecraft in 2027.

At Minecraft LIVE 2026, Mojang Studios officially introduced The Sift, Minecraft’s first new dimension in more than 14 years. It will be the fourth dimension, alongside the Overworld, the Nether and The End.

What Makes The Sift Special?

The Sift has a colorful visual style and its own ecosystem. Mojang revealed two areas, the Meadows and the Carapace, along with many new creatures, including some that can help players.

However, Mojang is keeping most details about The Sift under wraps so players can discover them for themselves.

Why is a “fourth dimension after 14 years” such a big milestone? Minecraft fully launched in 2011 and for more than a decade had only three fixed dimensions: the Overworld (the main world), the Nether (the fiery underworld) and The End (home of the Ender Dragon). Adding a completely new dimension is a core structural change that rarely happens in a game as mature and with a community as huge as Minecraft’s; most new content in the past expanded the existing dimensions (adding creatures, materials and terrain) rather than creating an entirely new parallel world.

First Appearance in Minecraft Dungeons II

The Sift will debut in Minecraft Dungeons II, which launched on September 29, 2026. In the game, players can enter The Sift through spatial cracks called Rifts, exploring the new area and facing its unique creatures.

Minecraft Dungeons II is available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Steam, PS5, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, and was on Xbox Game Pass from day one.

Coming to Minecraft in 2027

Notably, The Sift isn’t exclusive to Minecraft Dungeons II. Mojang confirmed the dimension will come to Minecraft Java Edition and Bedrock Edition in 2027.

How players will open a portal to The Sift and what exactly it contains have not yet been announced.

After more than 14 years with three familiar dimensions, Minecraft is preparing to enter a new era with the arrival of The Sift, the game’s fourth dimension.

OtaHub’s Take

Launching The Sift first in Minecraft Dungeons II, an action spin-off rather than the main Minecraft game, is a smart testing strategy: Mojang can watch the community’s reaction and fine-tune the new dimension’s design in a controlled environment before bringing it to the original Minecraft, where hundreds of millions of players will experience it and may uncover hard-to-predict balance or technical issues. This “test in a side product before bringing it to the main product” approach reduces the risk of a change as large as adding a fourth dimension.
