Overview
Minecraft was created by Markus "Notch" Persson in Java, opened as a public alpha on PC in 2009 and fully released in November 2011. Players are dropped into a randomly generated world of blocks, where they gather resources, craft tools, build shelters and fend off monsters at night. Microsoft acquired Mojang in 2014, and the game is now maintained by Mojang Studios together with Xbox Game Studios.
OtaHub's take
Minecraft's appeal lies in how little it forces a goal on you. Survival mode brings hunger, hostile mobs and the hunt for materials; creative mode removes every limit so you can simply build. The game exists as two parallel editions: Java Edition for PC, known for its modding community, and Bedrock Edition on consoles, mobile and Windows, with cross-platform play.
For years the game's world revolved around three dimensions: the Overworld, the Nether and the End. At Minecraft LIVE on 26 September 2026, Mojang revealed The Sift, a fourth dimension with its own colourful look, the Meadows and Carapace areas and many new creatures. It debuts first in Minecraft Dungeons II on 29 September 2026, then reaches Java Edition and Bedrock Edition in 2027. The event also showed the Ice Caves biome and a version for Switch 2.
Verdict
Minecraft suits free-form builders, survival players and groups of friends who want a long-running shared project. How players will reach The Sift in the main game has not been revealed by Mojang, so keep an eye on upcoming announcements.
