Overview
Gachiakuta adapts Kei Urana's manga, serialized in Kodansha's Weekly Shonen Magazine since February 2022. Rudo is a teenager from the slums of a city in the sky, where people dump their rubbish, and those deemed criminals, into the abyss below. Framed for murder, he is thrown down into that polluted land, discovers that he is a “Giver” who can pour life into objects to turn them into weapons, and joins the Cleaners, a group that hunts monsters born from garbage.
OtaHub's take
Bones Film produced the 24-episode anime, which aired from July to December 2025 and is available on Crunchyroll. Fumihiko Suganuma directs, Hiroshi Seko handles series composition, Satoshi Ishino designs the characters and Taku Iwasaki composes the music, with Hideyoshi Andou on graffiti design, a visual element tied to the street flavour of the original. The story deals with the value of discarded things, class prejudice and the cost of power. The manga also won the 50th Kodansha Manga Award in the shonen category in 2026.
Season 2 was announced in December 2025, with Bones Film returning to produce and Crunchyroll to stream. The first footage was shown at the Return to the Pit panel at Anime Expo on 3 July 2026, but an air date has not been announced. The franchise is also moving into games with Gachiakuta: Breakout, an action RPG with survival elements that SEGA presented at Tokyo Game Show 2026 for a 2027 release.
Verdict
Gachiakuta suits fans of dark action shonen, worlds with a strong visual identity and unusual power systems. It is also worth a look for Jujutsu Kaisen or Fire Force fans searching for a new series. The wait for season 2 is a good time to rewatch the first 24 episodes or read the manga, which continues well beyond the point the anime has reached.
