Overview

Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Freedom Zero is a prequel to the film Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Freedom, released in January 2024 and set one year after Seed Destiny. Sunrise announced the project in November 2024 through a teaser shown at special screenings of the earlier film, and a theatrical release was confirmed in May 2026. According to Anime News Network, the new trailer revealed on 8/10/2026 sets the Japanese theatrical release for 15/1/2027 and North America for February 2027, with no North American distributor named.

OtaHub's take

Director Mitsuo Fukuda has said the script was finished about 20 years ago and that the project was first planned as an OVA. The screenplay is by Shigeru Morita, Chiaki Morosawa and Fukuda. Hisashi Hirai handles character design and animation direction and Toshihiko Sahashi composes the music. Sunrise plans and produces, with Bandai Namco Filmworks and Shochiku distributing in Japan. The cast of the previous film returns, including Soichiro Hoshi (Kira Yamato), Rie Tanaka (Lacus Clyne), Akira Ishida (Athrun Zala), Kenichi Suzumura (Shinn Asuka) and Maaya Sakamoto (Lunamaria Hawke).

The sources describe the film as sitting between Seed Destiny and Seed Freedom, but do not say which period it covers or which characters are central. The Vietnamese release date has not been announced. For context, Anime News Network notes that Seed Freedom topped the box office in Japan and is the highest-grossing Gundam film there.

Verdict

It suits Gundam Seed fans who watched Seed Freedom and want to learn more about the gap between the two stories. Newcomers can still try it as a prequel, but since the cast is familiar from the 2024 film, watching Seed Freedom first will make it easier to follow.
