OtaHub's take
According to ANN, the protagonist is Mikado Watanabe, an introverted high school student who goes by the "King of Self-Destruction" online, a shogi player so strong that even professionals shudder. After a series of odd events he joins his school's shogi club and enters the amateur tournament Kōryūsen.
The hook is the gap between online fame and real life: away from the screen, Mikado has to face opponents in person, train with teammates and handle the pressure of having every move watched. Beyond the games, the story also follows him forming new relationships.
Renren Ii's light novel began on Kakuyomu in December 2023 and is still running. The first print volume came out on 21 March 2026, volume 3 on 24 August, and volume 4 is due on 20 November 2026. Katsuwo is the author of Mitsuboshi Colors and Hitoribocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu, so this project brings a competitive mind game into the gentle comic style the author is known for.
