Overview
RuneScape 4 (working title RS4) is Jagex's entirely new RuneScape MMORPG, announced at RuneFest 2026 on 3 October 2026. It is built in Unreal Engine and set in Gielinor during the Sixth Age, beginning in Ashenfall, the landmass north-east of Gielinor that players first explored in RuneScape: Dragonwilds. The story takes place years after the events of Dragonwilds and the destruction of the Dragon Queen Kuldra. Jagex says RS4 is not necessarily the final name.
OtaHub's take
According to PC Gamer and MMORPG.com, the project began as a 2027 expansion for Dragonwilds aimed at persistent servers, high player counts and social features. After playtesting, the team decided to turn it into a standalone game. Jagex lists three principles for RS4: integrity, permanent progression and community-driven development, and says the game will not replace Old School RuneScape, RuneScape or Dragonwilds.
RS4 is at the very beginning of development and is a few years away. Platforms, business model and release date have not been announced. Jagex has opened an interest page at play.runescape.com/4 and promises more details next year.
Verdict
RS4 is worth following for anyone who has played RuneScape or Dragonwilds, since it is the first time the series gets an MMO rebuilt from scratch on a new engine. It is still far off, though, so for now it is better to sign up for news than to wait for a specific launch date.
