Overview
THE GHOST IN THE SHELL (Koukaku Kidoutai), the 2026 version, is a new TV series adapting the cyberpunk manga Masamune Shirow began in 1989, published by Kodansha. Rather than continuing Mamoru Oshii's 1995 film or the Stand Alone Complex series, it goes back to the source material. It aired on Kansai TV and Fuji TV from 7 July 2026 and wrapped up after 10 episodes on 8 September 2026, with Prime Video as the early streaming platform in Japan.
OtaHub's take
The setting is a society where cybernetic bodies, brain interfaces and data networks have become part of everyday life. Major Motoko Kusanagi leads Public Security Section 9 with Batou, Togusa and the thinking tanks called Fuchikoma, handling cases where tech crime overlaps with political scheming. The main thread revolves around a mysterious hacker known as the Puppet Master, but the recurring question is the boundary between the ghost, a person's consciousness, and the shell, a replaceable body.
Director Mokochan works with writer Toh EnJoe, while Shuhei Handa serves as both character designer and chief animation director. Science SARU's linework and energy sit closer to the manga page than earlier versions, bringing back the satirical humor that rarely appeared in the more solemn adaptations. The opening theme GO GHOST is performed by King Gnu, and the ending Blue comes from MILLENNIUM PARADE with Saya Gray and Daniel Caesar. According to OtaHub's season wrap-up, the dense ideas and quick jumps between cases may make viewers new to cyberpunk slow down.
Verdict
This is a sensible entry point for anyone who has never watched Ghost in the Shell, since the series does not require knowledge of earlier versions. Longtime fans get to compare how a new team interprets the same source, while viewers who like Science SARU's distinctive animation style will find plenty to enjoy across ten compact episodes.
