OtaHub's take
The story takes place in a mountain village in rural Japan. Hikaru, Yoshiki's best friend, vanishes into the mountains and then comes back as if nothing happened. Yoshiki realizes at once that whatever wears Hikaru's form is not his friend. Even knowing the truth, he chooses to stay by its side, and that warped bond becomes the spine of the story.
The work's strength is fear driven by psychology rather than jump scares: loneliness, the dread of loss, and the thin line between friendship and clinging. The oppressive rural atmosphere, the things left unsaid between the two boys and a slow narrative pace create a lingering unease.
The anime, produced by CygamesPictures, ran for 12 episodes from 6 July to 28 September 2025. Season 2 is confirmed without an air date. With the manga closing after just two more chapters, readers will likely know the ending before the anime catches up.
