Overview
Witch Hat Atelier (Tongari Boushi no Atelier) adapts Kamome Shirahama's manga, serialized in Kodansha's Morning Two since July 2016. Coco, the daughter of a village dressmaker, has always dreamed of becoming a witch but believes magic is an inborn gift she lacks. When she happens to see the witch Qifrey drawing special symbols, she learns the secret: magic is triggered by drawings and the right ink. One experiment of her own has serious consequences and makes Coco Qifrey's apprentice.
OtaHub's take
The anime is produced by BUG FILMS, with director Ayumu Watanabe, series composition by Hiroshi Seko and music by Yuka Kitamura. The first season ran for 13 episodes from 6 April to the end of June 2026 on Tokyo MX and other channels, and is also available on Crunchyroll. The main challenge of the adaptation is recreating the manga's meticulous linework, which resembles old book illustrations, while a magic system built on the act of drawing allows for very distinctive animated scenes.
Unlike many magic school stories, Witch Hat Atelier puts weight on moral questions: who has the right to hold knowledge, and what happens when knowledge is monopolized or falls into the wrong hands. On 29 June 2026 the official website confirmed that season 2 is in production, and a new teaser followed in early July; according to OtaHub, no air date has been announced, so release dates circulating online are not official.
Verdict
The series suits lovers of fantasy with detailed worldbuilding, an unhurried pace and young characters who grow through their mistakes. Viewers who enjoyed Frieren or Studio Ghibli films are likely to find warmth here, mixed with darker corners woven in with care.
