Overview

Food Wars! (Shokugeki no Soma) is a manga written by Yuto Tsukuda and drawn by Shun Saeki, serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump from 26 November 2012 to 17 June 2019. The hero, Soma Yukihira, the son of a humble diner owner, is thrown by his father into Tōtsuki Culinary Academy, a harsh school where students settle disputes in cooking duels called shokugeki, with expulsion as the price of losing.

OtaHub's take

Its signature is turning cooking into a shonen arena: each match has a theme, an opponent, a strategy and the exaggerated reactions of the tasters. The series runs 324 chapters collected in 36 volumes, plus a three-chapter epilogue in Jump GIGA in 2019. Spin-offs include L'étoile on Shonen Jump+ and Shokugeki no Sanji, a 2018 One Piece crossover.

J.C.Staff adapted it into five anime seasons between 2015 and 2020, 86 episodes in total. On the creators' side, per OtaHub's coverage, Tsukuda and Saeki followed up with Tenmaku Cinema in 2023, which was ended after less than six months. They have now returned with the four-page romantic comedy one-shot Futari Dake no Quiz-bu in Jump GIGA Summer 2026, released in Japan on 17 August 2026.

Verdict

Suited to readers who like competitive shonen but want a kitchen setting. Readers should be ready for the exaggerated style and the fan service that are part of the series' character. Since it is finished, it can also be read straight through from start to end without waiting for new chapters.
