Overview
Blue Lock is a sports manga written by Muneyuki Kaneshiro and drawn by Yusuke Nomura, serialized in Kodansha's Weekly Shonen Magazine since 1 August 2018. The Japan Football Union hands eccentric coach Jinpachi Ego a radical project: gather 300 high school strikers in a closed training facility called Blue Lock and eliminate them one by one until only a striker selfish enough to carry the national team remains. The lead, Yoichi Isagi, is an unknown forward who has just missed the chance to take his school to nationals.
OtaHub's take
What sets Blue Lock apart is how it flips the usual values of sports stories. Teamwork is no longer the goal; ego, the hunger to score at any cost, is what gets celebrated. Each selection round plays out like a survival match in which players must find their own weapon and read the game faster than everyone else. The storytelling has the rhythm of a battle manga more than a traditional football series, with breakthroughs that Nomura draws with real intensity.
The franchise has spread across formats. Eight Bit's anime began airing in October 2022, the second season vs. U-20 Japan aired in late 2024 and a third season, Neo Egoist League, has been announced; the film Blue Lock: Episode Nagi reached cinemas in April 2024, and a live-action film opened in Japan on 7 August 2026. Most recently, Blue Lock teamed up with Sloclap's football game Rematch for a Season 5 event running from 24 September to 23 October 2026.
Verdict
Suited to readers who like highly competitive sports stories with plenty of tactical scheming and strong-willed characters, even if they do not follow football closely. Anyone after a realistic picture of the sport or a warm story about teammates should be ready for the series' deliberately extreme tone, which is the whole point of its premise.
