Overview
Halo: Campaign Evolved is a full remake of the Halo: Combat Evolved (2001) campaign, developed by Halo Studios and published by Xbox Game Studios to mark the franchise's 25th anniversary. It launched on 28 July 2026 on Xbox Series X|S, PC and PlayStation 5 after an early-play period from 23 July, and was in Game Pass from day one. It is the first official Halo game on Sony's platform.
OtaHub's take
Rather than a graphical upgrade alone, Halo Studios rebuilt the game on Unreal Engine 5 and modernised how it plays. Sprint is mapped to L3, health regenerates like an energy shield, enemies from later games join the roster, players can hijack enemy vehicles, and the Warthog gets a new control scheme. Smart-link offers roughly 1.4x magnification, alongside DualSense haptics and a reworked soundtrack.
New content includes three prequel missions covering Operation Meteorite, set a year before the main events, plus 42 Skulls and 13 Terminals placed differently from the Anniversary edition. Online co-op supports four players across platforms with shared progression, and console versions offer two-player split screen. The game ships without competitive multiplayer.
Verdict
This is the easiest way in for anyone who never played Halo, and a reason for veterans to revisit the familiar campaign. Anyone wanting a multiplayer shooter will not find one here.
