Overview
Hell's Paradise (Jigokuraku) adapts Yuji Kaku's manga, serialized on Shueisha's Shonen Jump+ from January 2018 to January 2021 and collected in 13 volumes. It is set in Japan at the end of the Edo period: Gabimaru, the notorious assassin of the Iwagakure ninja village awaiting execution, is promised a pardon if he brings back the elixir of life from the island of Shinsenkyo. With him goes Yamada Asaemon Sagiri, an executioner assigned to watch him and ready to strike if he betrays the mission.
OtaHub's take
MAPPA produced both anime seasons under director Kaori Makita, with Akira Kindaichi handling series composition and Yoshiaki Dewa composing the music. Season 1 ran for 13 episodes from April to July 2023, bringing the group of convicts and executioners onto the island. Season 2 ran for 12 episodes from 11 January to 29 March 2026, pushing the survivors deeper into the mysteries of Shinsenkyo and clarifying the true power that rules the island.
What sets the series apart is contrast: the island overflows with vivid flowers and religious-looking statues, yet underneath lie monsters and creatures that defy explanation. Violence is constant, but the story focuses on what drives each character: Gabimaru wants to live so he can return to his wife, while Sagiri keeps questioning her right to take other lives. A power system built on the energy called Tao gives the fights clear rules instead of a simple contest of raw strength.
Verdict
Hell's Paradise suits viewers who enjoy dark shonen action with a touch of horror and reflections on life and death, especially fans of Jujutsu Kaisen or Chainsaw Man. The two existing seasons are enough to get to know the world and its large cast; viewers sensitive to gore should think twice before starting.
