Overview

Sekiro: No Defeat is an anime adaptation of FromSoftware's action game Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. It follows Wolf, a shinobi sworn to protect Kuro, the Divine Heir, in a supernatural-tinged Sengoku-era Japan where the Ashina clan, led by Genichiro and Isshin, stand as the main adversaries.

OtaHub's take

The theatrical edition opened in Japan on 4 September 2026 for a three-week run, following a competition screening at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June 2026. According to AniList and Wikipedia there is also an eight-episode TV version slated for January 2027, and Crunchyroll will stream it outside Japan in 2026.

Studio Qzil.la produced it under director Kenichi Kutsuna, with a script by Takuya Satou, character designs by Takahiro Kishida and a score by Shūta Hasunuma. The theme song "Blu" comes from an album by the late Ryuichi Sakamoto. The Japanese voice cast of the game, including Daisuke Namikawa, Miyuki Satō and Kenjirō Tsuda, is confirmed to return.

On 22 August 2026 the production team issued a statement that no generative AI was used in making the film, after some viewers worried because of Qzil.la's links to projects using AI technology. Verdict: for players of the game who want to see how a title famed for its difficulty is retold in animation.
