Overview
Overgeared (Tempal) is a Korean web novel by Saenal, serialized on KakaoPage from 14 November 2014 to 26 April 2024, later printed in 57 volumes by Maru Publishing and released in English by Wuxiaworld. Shin Youngwoo works odd jobs to get by and spends hours a day in the virtual reality game Satisfy as Grid, but levels slowly and plays poorly. One day he receives an S-rank quest, and the reward is a scroll that moves him into a legendary class.

Saenal has said the basic premise was inspired by the novel Legendary Moonlight Sculptor, while the details borrow from the game Lineage. The author deliberately had the protagonist start out with almost no skill so readers could see every step of his growth. Grid is no model hero: he is greedy, insecure and quick to anger, and much of the appeal lies in watching him make the most of that unexpected advantage, especially when it comes to crafting gear.
The webtoon, adapted by Monohumbug and drawn by Team Argo, has run on KakaoPage since 1 April 2020; Tapas publishes it digitally in English and Yen Press's Ize Press imprint handles the print edition. The anime, produced by J.C.Staff and directed by Ayako Kōno, streamed early on Prime Video from 27 September 2026 before its 2 October 2026 broadcast on Tokyo MX and BS11, with Crunchyroll streaming worldwide.
Verdict
Suited to fans of VR game stories, from-zero protagonists and item crafting who can accept a lead with plenty of flaws. The web novel is complete, so the full story can be read now; readers who shy away from long prose can start with the webtoon or the anime that has just begun airing.
