Overview
KONOSUBA (Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!) began as a web novel by Natsume Akatsuki before Kadokawa published it as a light novel from October 2013 with illustrations by Kurone Mishima. Kazuma Sato, a teenage gaming addict, dies in embarrassing circumstances and is offered rebirth in a fantasy world by the goddess Aqua. He chooses to take Aqua herself along, and from then on has to carry a party made up of a disaster-prone goddess, Megumin, a mage who only uses explosion magic, and Darkness, a knight with odd tastes.
OtaHub's take
The anime premiered in January 2016, produced by Studio Deen with director Takaomi Kanasaki and writer Makoto Uezu. Season 2 followed in 2017, the J.C.Staff film Legend of Crimson reached theaters in 2019, and season 3 aired in April 2024 with Drive handling the animation. The appeal comes from flipping every isekai convention: the hero is not overpowered, every teammate has a major flaw, and simple quests tend to end in disaster and debt.
At the anime's 10th anniversary event on 26 July 2026, KONOSUBA confirmed that season 4 will air in 2027, this time produced by studio ENGI. Takaomi Kanasaki steps back to chief director, Manabu Kurihara becomes the main director, while Makoto Uezu, character designer Koichi Kikuta and composer Masato Kouda return. The core voice cast of Jun Fukushima, Sora Amamiya, Rie Takahashi and Ai Kayano remains unchanged. A specific air date has not been announced yet.
Verdict
KONOSUBA is for viewers who want to laugh with an isekai that pokes fun at itself, where fast comedic timing and character expressions matter more than battles. Newcomers can watch season 1, season 2, the Legend of Crimson film and then season 3 before season 4 airs. Those who dislike comedy with light fanservice should be aware of it beforehand.
