An anime hub right on the PS5 home screen

According to IGN, Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Hideaki Nishino announced that the PS5 will get a dedicated hub on the home screen from spring 2027, bringing together anime, anime-inspired games and a quick entry point to the Crunchyroll app. According to Variety, the goal is to make it easier for the PlayStation community to discover anime content. The Crunchyroll app has been on PS5 since 2020, and according to IGN the PS5 has sold more than 92 million units.

Crunchyroll president Rahul Purini said: “From Crunchyroll memberships on PlayStation to the upcoming Ghost of Tsushima: Legends anime series. Today we take our partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment a step further with the anime hub on PlayStation. Serving fans means meeting them where they are.”

Crunchyroll Storyworks: from stories to anime, from anime to live action

At the same event, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Crunchyroll launched Crunchyroll Storyworks, a division led by Tohru Iokibe, who has 25 years at Sony. The division adapts stories from around the world into anime and Japanese anime into live action, works with Japanese creators to preserve the original creative vision, and supplies production-ready projects to HAYATE, the joint venture of Aniplex and Crunchyroll formed in 2025.

Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Ravi Ahuja said the company has “a responsibility to protect and amplify what makes anime special, always keeping the creator’s vision at the center”. Tohru Iokibe said that “the best adaptations begin with respect for the original work”. No specific projects have been announced.

Ghost of Tsushima: Legends comes to anime in 2027

Purini’s remarks also recalled a project announced in early 2025: Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, an anime series based on the online mode of the Ghost of Tsushima game, streaming exclusively on Crunchyroll in 2027. It is directed by Takanobu Mizuno, with Gen Urobuchi (Psycho-Pass, Madoka Magica) handling the script structure and KAMIKAZE DOUGA doing the animation.

OtaHub’s take

For Sony, this links its two strongest arms: PlayStation, with more than 92 million consoles, and Crunchyroll, with more than 21 million paid subscribers as of March 2026. Putting anime on the home screen turns the PS5 into a gateway for watching anime, not just playing games. For gamers in Vietnam, the open question is whether this anime hub will work there, since Crunchyroll in Vietnam is currently distributed through Galaxy Play.
