Tax Shield: A Free Vietnamese Tax Filing Simulator Game

A tax filing simulator just went free on Threads: fill in returns, check invoices, settle taxes and face down auditors under Vietnam’s 2026 tax laws. Its tagline says it all: “Filing taxes isn’t hard, it’s just easy to end up in jail.”

Summary
Tax Shield is a free browser game made by Threads user @youngader6868, and it runs fine on a phone. You play a new accountant handling everything from VAT returns and payroll tax to year-end settlement and meetings with the tax office. The content follows Vietnam’s new 2026 tax laws, but it is still a practice simulation.

“Filing taxes isn’t hard, it’s just easy to end up in jail.” That joke is the tagline of Tax Shield, a tax filing simulator that Threads user @youngader6868 has just opened up for everyone to play for free. No dragons, no swords, just invoices, tax returns and an auditor who is always looking for a slip-up. It sounds dry, but it is surprisingly hard to put down, especially if your first tax settlement is coming up.

What is Tax Shield?

Tax Shield (full name: Tax Shield – Tax Monster Hunt 2026) runs straight in your browser, nothing to install. In the post announcing it, the creator said they decided to open it up “thanks to the community’s contributions”, and even rebuilt the interface so it plays well on phones. If you don’t feel like typing the link, there is a QR code in the post too.

The creator is also upfront that the game is “pretty heavy” and suits working professionals and students in accounting, auditing and finance best. That is what sets Tax Shield apart from just-for-laughs office simulators: every level is a real accounting problem, with an answer, an explanation and the law it is based on.

The story: from nervous intern to tax director

You are the new accountant at Juventus Co., Ltd., which has just received an audit notice. Boss Long hands out tasks every morning, while Khiên Khiên, a shield-shaped mascot, tags along with tips. The villain is Inspector Tax Shadow, who opens with “one small error is enough for me to fine the whole company”.

The game has five chapters, one for each rank. Chapter one is called “Nervous Intern”: on your very first day, the boss drops a stack of invoices on your desk. By the last chapter you are the tax director, defending the company against the Tax Shadow. In between there is a daily to-do list that looks just like the real job: close the books, reconcile payables, check e-invoices, and open the eTax inbox to see what the tax office has sent.

16 modes covering pretty much every tax

What surprised me most is how much ground it covers. Not just the familiar payroll tax and VAT, but things most people never touch:

  • VAT return: sort invoices, then fill in boxes [35], [25] and [40] on form 01/GTGT.
  • Personal income tax: work out tax on wages with the new five-bracket schedule, including a multi-employee payroll level.
  • Corporate income tax settlement: spot which expenses are not deductible.
  • Special consumption tax, foreign contractor tax, import duties, registration fees: from beer, alcohol and cars to CIF-priced imports, property and motorbikes.
  • Household businesses and special PIT cases: revenue-based filing, selling a house or shares, inheritance and gifts.
  • Blitz: five questions, 15 seconds each, good for a quick review on a break.
  • Surprise audit and Responding to the tax office: decide how to react, prepare documents and answer the officials.
  • A day as a tax accountant: an 8:30–17:30 shift that follows the real process, from checking documents and reconciling with the tax portal to preparing returns, paying and responding to queries. The shift ends with a scored report.

Any screen that needs numbers has a floating tax calculator built in, so you don’t need another app.

Hunting “tax monsters”, and the jail joke

To keep things light, every topic is a region on a map with lovingly named monsters: the Invoice Swamp has the “Fake Invoice Zombie” and the “Wrong Tax ID Ghost”, the Payroll Valley has the “Deduction Wolf”, the Expense Cave has the “Phantom Expense Dragon”, and the Market Village even has a “1-Billion Threshold Boar”. At the far end of the map sit the Audit Fortress and the Explanation Hall.

The “easy to end up in jail” part lives in the rules. You have five reputation points; each wrong answer or timeout costs one and moves you along a penalty scale: reprimand, heavy fine, high risk, travel ban, then prosecution. Three right answers in a row win a point back. Rack up five violations and you are dragged straight into the final boss, the “Interrogation Room”: eight questions over three rounds about your books, invoices and statements. You will laugh while playing, and you will remember it.

Is the tax knowledge accurate?

The game cites a legal basis for every question. I checked a few key milestones against the actual documents, and they line up:

  • Personal Income Tax Law No. 109/2025/QH15 was passed on December 10, 2025 and takes effect on July 1, 2026. The family deduction rises to 15.5 million VND per month for the taxpayer and 6.2 million VND per month per dependant, and the tax schedule drops from seven brackets to five. The wage rules apply to the whole of 2026, so you will see the effect when settling taxes in early 2027.
  • Tax Administration Law No. 108/2025/QH15 takes effect on July 1, 2026, while its rules on filing, tax calculation and e-invoices for household and individual businesses already apply from January 1, 2026.
  • Circular 89/2026/TT-BTC (effective July 1, 2026) replaces all the old tax forms. From then on, employers file personal income tax on wages quarterly, plus a year-end settlement.
  • There are also the classics, like invoices of 5 million VND or more needing a bank transfer to claim input VAT, and late-payment interest of 0.03% per day.

Still, the game itself warns on its first screen that the questions are simulations and real filings should follow current regulations. A few figures, such as revenue thresholds for household businesses or exemption caps, are worth double-checking with the tax office before you rely on them.

Who should give it a go?

If you are studying accounting, auditing or finance, Tax Shield is a far less sleepy way to revise than a textbook. New employees can jump straight into the personal income tax mode to see why tax comes off their salary and how deductions work. Working accountants can use Blitz and A day as a tax accountant to catch up on the 2026 changes quickly. And if you run a small business, the household business mode is worth a try.

One small note: you need to enter a display name to play, and it may show up on the public leaderboard, so a nickname is the safer choice.

FAQ: Tax Shield

Where can I play Tax Shield, and does it cost anything?

Open khai-bao-thue-stimulator.vercel.app on a computer or phone and you are in. It is completely free; you just enter a display name to start. The game is in Vietnamese.

Can I play without an accounting background?

You can, but it will be a bit of a struggle. The creator says the game is fairly knowledge-heavy and best suited to accounting, auditing and finance students and professionals. If you just want to understand the tax on your own salary, start with the personal income tax mode.

Is the tax knowledge in the game up to date?

It cites recent documents such as Personal Income Tax Law 109/2025, Tax Administration Law 108/2025 and Circular 89/2026/TT-BTC. It is still a simulation, though, so check current regulations or ask the tax office when filing for real.

What is the family deduction in Vietnam for 2026?

Under Personal Income Tax Law No. 109/2025/QH15, taxpayers get 15.5 million VND per month for themselves and 6.2 million VND per month for each dependant, applied to the whole 2026 tax year.

Do you really “go to jail” if you lose?

Of course not. Mistakes cost reputation points, and too many of them get you “invited” into the in-game interrogation room. In real life, as the game itself says: file correctly, completely and on time, and you will be fine.

OtaHub’s take

Tax Shield doesn’t have flashy graphics, but it has what a lot of tax guides are missing: concrete situations, instant feedback when you get something wrong, and enough humor that you don’t quit halfway. It is also a lovely example of the Vietnamese community using a game to defuse a very everyday fear. If your first tax settlement is coming up, a few rounds will make family deductions, input VAT and late-payment interest feel a lot less foreign. Just remember: the game is for practice, and your real filing still needs care.
