Most widely known for the Pokémon franchise for nearly three decades, Game Freak has just officially entered a new chapter in studio history with Beast of Reincarnation, the first AAA game completely separate from the Pokémon world. Game due Kota Furushima director, published by Fictions, will be available from August 4, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, along with being available from day one on Xbox Game Pass (both Console and PC versions).
Setting: Japan in 4026, the world is devastated by the Blight
Beast of Reincarnation takes players to Japan of the year 4026, millennia after a disaster called "the Blight" has turned the world into a desolate land, full of corrupted creatures. main character, Emma, is a girl infected with the Blight from birth, which makes her a social outcast. But that "flaw" gives her a special ability: absorbing power from monsters Nushi, giant corrupted creatures that she defeats on her journey.

Koo: the companion dog is more than just an accessory
The biggest highlight that makes Beast of Reincarnation stand out among countless other Souls-like games is that Koo, the companion dog has its own health bar, not simply an AI combat support. Koo guides the player through pheromone indicators, and his skill slots expand based on the level of rapport the player builds, through petting (with haptic feedback on the DualSense controller), feeding him, or bathing him at the mobile base called "Cleanse Walker". This is a design that the developers describe in a concise way: \"a woman and her dog saving the world.\"
In his pre-release review on the PlayStation Blog, writer Corey Brotherson describes the relationship between Emma and Koo as the "true heart" of the entire experience, not just a gameplay mechanic but an emotional thread running through their survival journey in a land ravaged by Blight.PlayStation Blog, pre-release preview, August 3, 2026
Combat system: Souls-like focuses on blocking attacks
In terms of combat, Beast of Reincarnation follows the familiar Souls-like formula but emphasizes parrying skills rather than pure dodging:
- R1: Basic sword combo chain
- L1: block/parry
- Circle: dodge
- Square: Activate Nushi Skills / Blade Arts
- R2: Move skills are based on Emma's "Blight hair".
- Triangle: Koo's special move "Bloom Arts" takes the form of a rhythm minigame, activated by Fluorescence points accumulated from successful parries.
- L3+R3: The keystroke activates "Entanglement Overdrive", Emma's special time-slowing ability
Survival: mobile farming and cooking system
In addition to combat, the game also integrates a deep layer of survival mechanics: the hunger gauge is a mandatory element for natural healing, forcing players to constantly find materials in the field. Character Kagura, Emma's adopted younger sister, takes on the role of chef, processing gathered ingredients into restorative meals. Players can even raise chickens and grow crops right on the Cleanse Walker mobile base, turning it into a miniature survival space in the desolate world.
Throughout the journey, there is also the mysterious appearance of a character named Violet, who only Emma can see and hear, reveals a curious layer of supernatural/psychological backstory that Game Freak hadn't revealed in detail ahead of release.

Meaning: Game Freak's turning point
After nearly 30 years of almost absolute association with the Pokémon brand, Game Freak's investment in developing a completely new AAA title, with its own worldview, combat system, and emotionally deep companion dog, is a notable milestone demonstrating the Japanese studio's ambition to expand. The decision to release it simultaneously on Xbox Game Pass from day one is also a rare strategy for reaching a wide audience for a completely new AAA project that doesn't rely on any existing brand.
