Resident Evil Requiem is the first entry in the series to let players switch between first- and third-person perspective

The story: Grace Ashcroft and the ghosts of Raccoon City

Requiem is set roughly 30 years after the missile strike that destroyed Raccoon City. The protagonist is Grace Ashcroft, an FBI technical analyst and the daughter of Alyssa Ashcroft, an investigative journalist and Raccoon City survivor. Grace is pulled into an investigation of a string of deaths at the Wrenwood Hotel, forcing her to confront her mother's unsolved death and the secrets of the Umbrella Corporation. She soon catches the attention of former Umbrella scientist Dr. Victor Gideon, who believes Grace's natural immunity to the T-virus and the entire Progenitor Virus family is the key to unlocking a secret project called Elpis.

Leon Kennedy returns with secrets of his own

Along the way, Grace crosses paths with Leon S. Kennedy, the series' longtime anti-bioterrorism agent, who is hiding secrets of his own. This marks the first time Resident Evil has built its structure around two protagonists with distinctly different experiences: Grace's sections lean into investigative horror, while Leon's lean into fast-paced action.

Gameplay: dual perspective, a first for the series

Requiem's biggest departure is letting players freely switch between first- and third-person perspective across the roughly 12-hour campaign. Grace's sections default to first-person to maximize the sense of claustrophobia, while Leon's action-heavy sections lean toward a classic third-person over-the-shoulder view, but players can toggle either perspective on both characters at will. According to the director, the feature is aimed largely at players who found RE7's pure first-person perspective difficult to get through.

Umbrella, the Progenitor Virus and Project Elpis

Requiem digs further into Umbrella lore by placing Grace's unusual immunity to the Progenitor Virus at the center of its plot. Dr. Gideon believes Grace is the key to "unlocking Elpis", a detail that ties directly back to Raccoon City's history and her mother's legacy, forming one of the most-discussed lore twists in recent RE entries.
