Tetsu Kariya and Akira Hanasaki's cooking manga Oishinbo is getting a new TV anime titled Shin Oishinbo. Shin-Ei Animation announced the project on September 19, 2026 at ABEMA Anime Matsuri 2026, during a stage presentation celebrating the studio's 50th anniversary.
It is Oishinbo's first return to the small screen in about 35 years. The previous TV anime was made by Shin-Ei Animation itself, airing from 1988 to 1992 across 136 episodes, alongside two films by Studio Deen released in 1992 and 1993.
The premiere date, voice cast, staff and animation studio have not been confirmed. According to one source, the anime is scheduled for 2027.
What Is Oishinbo About?
The protagonist is Shirō Yamaoka, a food journalist at the Tōzai News who runs the "Ultimate Menu" project. His rival is his own father, Yūzan Kaibara, who leads a competing "Supreme Menu" project for another newspaper, creating a conflict that is both family and culinary throughout the story.
The manga ran in Big Comic Spirits from October 1983 to May 2014 in 111 volumes, sold over 135 million copies and won the Shogakukan Manga Award in 1986. It went on indefinite hiatus from May 12, 2014 after controversy over a chapter related to Fukushima.
