Among the Straw Hats, Roronoa Zoro is the only member besides captain Luffy confirmed to have Conqueror’s Haki. The twist is that he was infusing One Piece’s rarest Haki into his swords as early as his fight with Kaido in Wano without realizing it, and only truly took control of it in chapter 1194 on Elbaf. Here are the four techniques that mark that journey, with manga chapters and anime episodes so you can revisit them. Spoilers up to chapter 1194.
What is Conqueror’s Haki infusion, and why is it so rare?
Regular Conqueror’s Haki lets its user overpower the will of weaker people. At an advanced level, a select few can also infuse Conqueror’s Haki into their body or weapons: their attacks can damage without direct contact, along with the signature black lightning. It is a power held by the very top of the world, names like Roger, Whitebeard, Shanks, Kaido, Big Mom and Luffy.
For Zoro, the sword Enma plays a special role. As early as chapter 955, Enma drained Zoro’s Haki until his arm withered, before he took back control. Letting Enma draw out his Haki is exactly what allowed Zoro’s Conqueror’s Haki to surface in Wano’s life-or-death fights.
| Technique | Opponent | Manga / Anime | Level of control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ashura Bakkei: Moja no Tawamure | Kaido | Chapter 1010 / Episode 1027 | Unconscious |
| King of Hell Three Sword Style: Rengoku Oni Giri | King | Chapter 1035 / Episode 1062 | Instinctive, through Enma |
| King of Hell Three Sword Style: Ippyakusanjo Hiryu Jigoku | King | Chapter 1035 / Episode 1062 | Instinctive, through Enma |
| Senhachiju Pound Ho (Conqueror’s-infused) | Sommers | Chapter 1194 / not yet animated | Deliberate |

1. Ashura Bakkei: Moja no Tawamure: the scar on Kaido
On the roof of Onigashima, as Kaido was about to finish Luffy, Zoro pushed past his limits in his nine-sword Ashura form and unleashed Ashura Bakkei: Moja no Tawamure. The slash left a long scar across Kaido’s chest. According to the One Piece Wiki, Zoro was the first person since Kozuki Oden to scar Kaido with a blade.
It was Kaido who noticed something unusual: he said the wound would definitely leave a scar, and that Zoro had just used Conqueror’s Haki. Zoro had no idea what he meant and collapsed. The chapter is named after that very moment: chapter 1010, "Haoshoku", the Japanese name for Conqueror’s Haki (anime episode 1027).
2. Rengoku Oni Giri: his first flying slash in King of Hell style
Fighting King, Kaido’s right-hand man, Zoro made a reckless choice in chapter 1033: he let Enma draw as much Haki as it wanted. As a result, all three swords were infused with both Armament and Conqueror’s Haki, though still instinctively and with part of the power leaking out. Zoro named this state King of Hell Three Sword Style (En-Ō Santōryū), and he can only hold it briefly because the Haki drain could kill him.
The first technique in this state was Rengoku Oni Giri (Purgatory Oni Giri), an upgraded version of his familiar Oni Giri. Thanks to Conqueror’s Haki, a close-range slash became a long-range flying slash. It missed King, but shattered the boulder he was standing on.

3. Ippyakusanjo Hiryu Jigoku: the move that defeated King
Still in chapter 1035, Zoro charges at King, leaps into the air, brings his hand swords over the blade in his mouth and swings down. All the infused Haki is released as one long-range slash: Ippyakusanjo Hiryu Jigoku splits King’s fire dragon, which burns hotter than magma, breaks his sword, hits him squarely in the torso and severs one of his wings. King falls, closing one of the best fights of the Wano arc.
The name is also one of Oda’s puns: it nods to "Ippyakusanjō Imojigoku", a picture by Edo-period artist Santō Kyōden in which sweet potatoes are judged by the King of Hell. VIZ translates the move as "103 Mercies Dragon Damnation". The anime version is in episode 1062, "The Three-Sword Style of the Supreme King! Zoro vs. King", which aired on May 21, 2023.
4. Conqueror’s-infused Senhachiju Pound Ho: Zoro takes control
After Wano, it took until Elbaf for Zoro to know for sure that he had Conqueror’s Haki. In chapter 1152, Scopper Gaban, a former member of the Roger Pirates, told him directly. A tough test followed: the Knights of God regenerate almost endlessly, and ordinary sword strikes do no lasting damage.
In chapter 1193, "Still Practicing", Zoro was surrounded by Saint Sommers’ invisible thorns, which are harder than iron, yet still cut through them and came close to stabbing his steel heart. In chapter 1194, "All Things Are In Flux" (released September 27, 2026), Sommers realized Zoro could not yet control his Conqueror’s Haki and was using him as a training dummy. When Sommers launched his thorn dragon Ibaran Kiryu, Zoro answered with a Conqueror’s-infused Senhachiju Pound Ho (1080 Pound Phoenix). The flying slash tore straight through Sommers’ attack, and then a black-lightning strike cut off his right hand. This time, the hand would not reattach.
The turning point is a flashback: Mihawk once told Zoro that every Conqueror’s Haki user shares one thing that never changes, a strong sense of self. Realizing this, Zoro ties on his bandana and coats his swords in Conqueror’s Haki at will. Unlike the three techniques in Wano, this is the first time he uses the power fully on purpose.
From instinct to control: how Zoro has changed
- Chapter 955: Enma drains Zoro’s Haki, hinting at the power hidden inside him.
- Chapter 1010: his first Conqueror’s infusion, noticed only by Kaido.
- Chapters 1033–1035: letting Enma draw out his Haki gives birth to King of Hell Three Sword Style and the win over King.
- Chapter 1117: on Egghead, Zoro crosses swords with Elder Nusjuro, a fellow swordsman, as black lightning surrounds them both.
- Chapter 1152: Scopper Gaban confirms Zoro has Conqueror’s Haki.
- Chapters 1193–1194: he practices mid-fight against Sommers and infuses his swords on purpose.
The anime adds an even earlier moment: in episode 984, hearing Beasts Pirates mock Wano’s poor residents, Zoro unknowingly releases Haki that knocks them all out, while he assumes they just drank too much. That scene is anime-only and does not appear in the manga.
FAQ: Zoro’s Conqueror’s Haki
Does Zoro have Conqueror’s Haki?
Yes. Kaido noticed it in chapter 1010, and in chapter 1152 Scopper Gaban, a former member of the Roger Pirates, told Zoro directly that he has Conqueror’s Haki.
When does Zoro first use Conqueror’s Haki?
In the manga, the first confirmed use is chapter 1010, when Ashura Bakkei: Moja no Tawamure leaves a scar on Kaido’s chest. The anime adds an earlier moment in episode 984, when Zoro unknowingly knocks out a group of Beasts Pirates.
Has Zoro mastered Conqueror’s Haki?
Chapter 1194 shows Zoro infusing his swords at will after remembering Mihawk’s lesson. The fight with Sommers is not over, though, so later chapters will show how consistently he can keep it up.
Which technique did Zoro use to defeat King?
King of Hell Three Sword Style: Ippyakusanjo Hiryu Jigoku in chapter 1035 (anime episode 1062). It cut through King’s fire dragon, broke his sword, hit his torso and severed one of his wings.
When does One Piece chapter 1195 come out?
One Piece takes a one-week break after chapter 1194; chapter 1195 is scheduled for October 11, 2026.
OtaHub’s take
What makes Zoro’s Conqueror’s Haki arc compelling is that Oda never hands it to him easily. In Wano it bursts out in desperate moments and always comes at a heavy cost from Enma. On Elbaf it becomes something Zoro has to learn, fail at and practice again in the middle of a real fight. Tying on his bandana and severing a hand that Sommers cannot regenerate is a genuine step forward, and it brings Zoro closer to his goal of surpassing Mihawk. The fight continues when One Piece returns with chapter 1195 on October 11, 2026.
