One player finished a full Premier League season in Football Manager 27 and found counter-attacks, long balls and crosses effective, while patient passing through the middle falls flat.

Scope. This is one player's impression, not an OtaHub hands-on test. They posted in the Facebook group Football Manager in Vietnam 2.0 on November 2, 2026, after finishing a Premier League season with Manchester United. The post does not say which build they played, but the game only launches on November 10, so it was most likely the Launch Preview. OtaHub has not played it yet, so this piece carries no score and does not confirm the claims below.

The Launch Preview is Sports Interactive's pre-release build. According to Football Manager's announcement, it has a clearer interface, an upgraded match engine and two new tactical tools, Tactical Tweaks and Tactical Effectiveness. The studio also warns that some player and team data is still awaiting licence approval and may not match reality.

Which tactics are paying off?

According to this player, the most effective styles in FM27 are counter-attacks, long balls and crosses. Almost everything else is close to useless because goalkeepers save too much. They describe three attacking patterns that produce goals. The first is the goalkeeper or a defender hitting a long pass over the lines for a striker to run onto. The second is a central midfielder taking the ball, drawing defenders, then passing out wide for a wing-back or winger to push up and cross. The third is a wide player passing into the half space between the centre and the touchline for a midfielder to run into the box and pull the ball back for a teammate to shoot.

By contrast, patient passing through the middle, or wingers cutting inside to shoot, mostly ends in shots wide or saves. They add that if you manage a top club like Man City, Arsenal, PSG, Barcelona, Real Madrid or Bayern, you will win however you play. Playing to the meta mainly matters for people managing mid-table or weaker teams who want to squeeze the most points out of a season.

Which roles got stronger and which got weaker?

The player found wing-backs clearly stronger: some run the length of the pitch with the ball and nobody stops them. A pair of defensive midfielders (a double pivot) is also necessary, and they suggest prioritising big, physical players like Baleba over more technical ones like Tielemans. A target man, the tall striker who acts as the reference point up front, changes how the team plays in build-up, on crosses and in defence, even a decent one like Mateta. The free role, close to a number 10 who roams and creates, also gets praise.

Two groups are rated weaker. The first is wingers who cut inside (inside forwards, inverted wingers): apart from world-class players at big clubs, mid-level ones near the box tend to play a one-two and lose the ball. The way out they suggest is dropping back to wing-back, as with Neto or Amad Diallo, or moving to number 10, as with Cherki. The second is creative midfielders (playmakers, box-to-box): apart from Pedri, De Jong and Bellingham, it is hard for them to compete with big physical midfielders, because counter-attacking football gives them little time on the ball.

Which formations work?

The player recommends three. A 3-4-2-1 and its 3-2-4-1 variant, the so-called "Amorim ball", puts five defenders and two holding midfielders in front of goal, which makes it very hard to break down, while two wing-backs, two wide number 10s and a tall striker cause real trouble for opponents. A 4-2-3-1 is balanced and fits any style, and they suggest pairing a free role with a target man and using overlaps and underlaps down the flanks. A 5-2-3 is the surprise pick: used to counter opponents playing five at the back, it produced surprising results because the AI struggles to get through a five-man defence while three forwards wait to counter.

Is Manchester United easy or hard?

According to the player, the Premier League is fairly easy as long as key players like Sesko do not pick up too many injuries. A top-four finish is within reach, and winning the title takes some game knowledge. In the Champions League they have only met Inter, PSG and Barcelona, not Real Madrid, and rank PSG above Barcelona and Barcelona above Inter. The knockout rounds are winnable, but in the final their own estimate of the win chance is only about 40 percent. They name Arsenal as the dark horse among the top six, and Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa as the dangerous mid-table sides because they play to what is working.

They also admit they restarted two or three times before landing a quick title. The new interface, new training system and separate in-possession and out-of-possession setups can overwhelm you early.

What is the most annoying part?

The player picks tactical training. In their experience, the squad needs nearly three quarters of a season to learn all its tactics, so the early season is chaotic: mid-table teams sit on top of the league while big clubs struggle, and anyone with a hard fixture list is likely to be sacked. Late in the season, strong teams string together five to ten-match unbeaten runs. They also see the AI repeating the same 3-2-5 shape from the domestic leagues all the way to the Champions League. Once you know how to counter it, things get much easier. They compare the game to handing you every kind of fancy weapon and then only letting you smash rocks.

On defence, they suggest changing the role of the two holding midfielders when out of possession: Dropping Defensive Midfielder in a back four, to stop passes into the half space, and Wide Covering Defensive Midfielder in a back five, to deal with overlapping runs. What they like most is being able to use two different shapes in and out of possession. By their own estimate, using that well gives you close to a 60 percent chance of winning.

Should you buy it now?

The player's advice is to wait for a sale. Keep in mind this is one person's view, over one season, with one club and possibly on a pre-release build, so it is a signal to keep watching rather than a verdict. After November 10, patches and opinions from more players will give a clearer picture. Anyone who wants to try it can download the Launch Preview, free until 1:00 a.m. on November 4 Vietnam time. Details are in our piece on the free play window.
