Story
The story follows Thorfinn from a revenge-driven Viking teenager working under the mercenary Askeladd to a pacifist seeking Vinland. It spans four arcs: War, Slave, Eastern Expedition and Vinland.
After the Slave arc, critics were surprised by Thorfinn's quieter personality but appreciated how his slave life remained narratively compelling.
Behind The Scenes
Yukimura traveled to Scandinavia, Denmark, Iceland, France, Britain and Canada, saying the Oseberg Ship was the most beautiful he had ever seen. He also built full-scale models to ensure accuracy in his artwork.
The manga was first serialized in Weekly Shonen Magazine (April–October 2005) before moving to Monthly Afternoon in December 2005 because the author could not maintain a weekly schedule. He typically worked with three assistants for nearly twelve hours a day, producing chapters of about 30 pages.
