1. Modern Warfare 4 Goes Hands-On At Gamescom
Xbox returned to Gamescom 2026 in Cologne with a large booth: 140 playable stations spread across 25 games, marking 25 years of the Xbox brand. The star of the booth was unquestionably Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, which let press and fans play its Core 6v6 Multiplayer mode on Xbox Series X stations; Xbox calls it the franchise's signature mode.
2. An Unprecedented Korean Peninsula Setting
First announced by Infinity Ward in May 2026, this Modern Warfare 4 campaign drops players into an entirely new global crisis: North Korea launches a full-scale invasion of South Korea, pushing the world toward destabilization. The story uses a dual-protagonist structure: Private Park, a young South Korean soldier facing live combat for the first time alongside his squad on a collapsing front line, and the legendary Captain Price, now operating outside the official chain of command on a personal mission that pulls him back to the center of the conflict.

3. A Global Journey Across Multiple Fronts
The campaign takes players through brutal trench warfare in Korea, tense close-quarters combat in New York City, high-speed chases through Paris, SAS night raids in Mumbai, and city-scale battles to reclaim occupied territory. The development team describes it as the most grounded Modern Warfare story yet, with a darker tone, large-scale cinematic missions, and a global crisis with real stakes.
4. Release Date And Platforms
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 officially launches on October 23, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and on Nintendo Switch 2 the same day, according to the official Call of Duty blog. It is the first Call of Duty on a Nintendo console since Ghosts on Wii U.

What else is at the Xbox booth, and where MW4 runs
According to Xbox and Gaming Trend, the booth is in Hall 7, booth A-0.61, open to visitors Aug. 27 to 30 (Gamescom itself runs Aug. 26 to 30). Besides Modern Warfare 4, the playable list includes Gears of War: E-Day, Minecraft Dungeons II, Metro 2039, Halo: Campaign Evolved, Stranger Than Heaven, Alien: Isolation 2, Forza Horizon 6 and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. Fable appears as a live demo from Playground Games in the theater area, not as a hands-on build. Xbox also streams on YouTube and Twitch on Aug. 26 and 27 at 4:00 p.m. CEST, with developer interviews and new announcements.
On platforms, Infinity Ward announced MW4 in late May 2026 with an October 23, 2026 release date. According to Neowin, the game drops the previous console generation entirely, so there is no PS4 or Xbox One version. The Switch 2 version is being built by Digital Legends with Activision and supports crossplay and cross-progression with PC, Xbox and PlayStation players, per Dexerto, and it launches the same day, October 23, as the other versions.
The sources consulted give no performance figures or detailed press impressions yet; Xbox only confirms that the Core 6v6 mode was at the booth.
