An in-depth look at Girls' Frontline 2: Exilium compiled from public sources: cover and Stability Break mechanics, gacha pity (80-pull characters, 70-pull weapons), cel-shaded 3D graphics, and drawbacks. Score: 8.6/10.

Sources & Scope

  • Scope: An analysis compiled from official material, IOP Wiki, GameTora and community guides; not a personal play diary.
  • Reference version: Data current to September 2026, when the main story had reached chapter 19.5 (Global launch: December 3, 2024).
  • A note on performance figures: Frame rates, temperatures and battery figures in this article are indicative and vary by device and patch.
  • Editorial transparency: OtaHub received no sponsorship for this article. Gacha figures were cross-checked against public sources.

After years of troubled development and closed betas (CBT) that sparked heated debate in the international community, Girls' Frontline 2: Exilium (GFL2) launched globally on December 3, 2024 and in Vietnam on August 27, 2026 through THS Game. Shedding the 2D chibi card style that made the 2016 first game famous, MICA Team's sequel has become a turn-based 3D tactical RPG (Turn-based Tactical RPG) with an isometric view and a distinctly cinematic feel.

1. Story: A Bleak Saga of the Forgotten Commander

Set 10 years after the dissolution of the private military company Griffin & Kryuger, the world of Exilium sinks deeper into the ruin of a post–World War III catastrophe. The Commander — your avatar — is now an independent bounty hunter. With no more fortified underground bases, you lead a group of close Tactical Dolls (T-Dolls) aboard an old armored expedition vehicle named Amos / Elmo, roaming through the Yellow Zones and Red Zones flooded with mutated Collapse Fluid radiation.

GFL2's story keeps the series' signature bleak, politically heavy and tragic spirit. The relationship between humans and T-Dolls is not idealized: society treats them as expired mechanical weapons to be scrapped, while the doll girls themselves — Groza, Nemesis, Tololo or Colphne — still struggle to find meaning and freedom in their existence. A big plus is the fully voiced 3D dialogue cutscenes (Japanese, Chinese and Korean), with eye expression and facial movement far more lively than in pure 2D visual novels.

2. Tactical Depth: A Miniature XCOM or Old Wine in a New Bottle?

If you worried gacha developers would simplify turn-based play to please players who love automation (Auto-Battle), GFL2 is a firm answer: the game is extremely hardcore and unforgiving of tactical mistakes.

Cover System & Flanking

GFL2's maps are divided into grid cells (grid-based). Every hiding spot is clearly graded:

  • Half Cover: Provides medium protection, reducing damage from direct shots (about 20–35% depending on the type of cover).
  • Full Cover: The sturdiest kind of obstacle, reducing direct damage by about 35%. While Stability remains, the stacked reduction can reach 85–95%.
  • Flanking: If you move a T-Doll around the outer edge of an obstacle's 90-degree angle, the enemy's Cover value instantly drops to 0%. This is the key to eliminating enemy snipers or heavy machine gunners without taking return fire.

Stability Gauge & the Stability Break Mechanic

What gives GFL2 its breakthrough identity compared with rivals such as Honkai: Star Rail is the Stability Gauge. Every unit on the field has a Stability value alongside its HP bar:

  • While Stability remains and a unit stands behind cover, incoming damage is sharply reduced (typically by an extra 60% or so).
  • Each attack drains a different amount of Stability depending on the nature of the hit.
  • Break state (Stability Break): When the gauge drops to 0, the defensive armor collapses. The target relies only on the cover's inherent damage reduction, and takes full damage if shot from behind cover or hit by a melee attack that ignores cover. Mastering the shattering of a boss's Stability gauge is the only key to clearing the tough Challenge stages.

3. Breaking Down the Gacha: 70-Pull Weapon Pity & 80-Pull Character Pity

One of the most important things new players need to get exactly right — and where many sources often make mistakes — is GFL2's pity system :

Category Character banner (T-Doll) Weapon banner (Signature Weapon)
Base SSR rate0.60%0.70%
Soft pity (rate begins to rise)From pull 58From pull 50
Hard pity (guaranteed)Exactly 80 pullsExactly 70 pulls (not 80!)
Rate-up rule50/50. If you lose to a standard character, the next SSR is guaranteed to be the banner character.A more favorable 75/25. If you lose to a standard weapon, the next SSR is guaranteed to be the featured weapon.
Carry-overFully carries over to subsequent bannersFully carries over to subsequent banners

What deserves praise is that the Weapon Banner sets its hard pity at just 70 pulls with a 75% win rate, significantly lower than the 80-pull mark or the three-time weapon trap system of some games in the same segment. Even so, the resource pressure is real: owning both a limited character (like Tololo or Jiangyu) and a matching signature weapon takes an average of 110 to 140 pulls with average luck.

4. Cel-Shaded Graphics & the Dormitory: Beautiful but Lacking Deep Interaction

Visually, MICA Team has created a cel-shaded graphical wonder in the gacha world. The weave of costume fabric, the roughness of kevlar armor and the metallic sheen of automatic AR rifles and sniper rifles are all built with an extremely realistic PBR (Physically Based Rendering) material standard. There is no aliasing or texture blur even when the camera zooms in.

That satisfaction fades, however, when you enter the Dormitory. The game lets you decorate the bedroom, interact with a free 360-degree view and watch the T-Dolls' cute gestures as they rest. But after about the first 10 hours, this mode reveals its monotony:

  • Interactions mostly revolve around gifting items to raise the Affection Level and unlocking Photo Mode poses.
  • There are no tactical interaction minigames, no logistics assignments or in-depth part crafting like the predecessor had. It is purely a fan-service feature for admiring characters rather than a gameplay system with mechanical depth.

5. Objective Assessment: Barriers and Limitations That Need Improvement

To meet the standard of a fair in-depth analysis, the remaining shortcomings of the current version cannot be ignored:

Criteria PC client experience Mobile experience (iOS / Android)
Frame rate (FPS)Usually smooth; high frame rates possible depending on your hardwareDevice-dependent; mid-range phones may drop frames in effect-heavy scenes
Temperature & batteryGentler than mobileHeavy 3D graphics make phones run hot and drain the battery in long sessions
ControlsResponsive hotkeys, and mouse dragging selects cells with absolute precisionEasy to tap the wrong cell when rotating the camera on a small touchscreen
Install sizeCheck the size on Steam or the official download pageCheck the size on the App Store / Google Play
  • Stamina bottleneck: From level 35 onward, the stamina spent farming upgrade materials for the Mind Map (talent board) and weapon accessory chips rises exponentially.
  • Piece dilution (Mind Upgrade / Dupes): Although a base character with 0 duplicates is fully capable of clearing 100% of the story PVE content, some strong T-Dolls depend on the Dupe 1 or Dupe 2 milestones to unlock extra actions (Extra Action) or longer range, creating pressure to spend for players competing on the tower leaderboard.
  • Incomplete mobile optimization: Heavy 3D graphics make many phones run hot and lose performance during long continuous play. OtaHub's sincere advice is to prioritize playing GFL2 on the PC client to enjoy the full, outstanding graphics quality.

6. Summary of Pros & Cons

Highlights

  • Excellent XCOM-style tactical depth: combining cover, flanking and Stability Break demands careful calculation.
  • Beautiful 3D PBR cel-shaded graphics among the best in today's anime game segment.
  • A dark post-apocalyptic story, rich in humanity and well voiced.
  • The PC client offers more comfortable visuals and controls than mobile.
  • A weapon-banner hard pity of just 70 pulls with a friendly 75% win rate.

Drawbacks to Note

  • Mobile devices heat up and drop FPS quickly in long battles.
  • The dormitory system lacks substantial interactive minigames and leans heavily toward photo fan-service.
  • The stamina-farming pressure in the second half of the game is quite tight.
  • Some powerful support skills are locked behind character duplicate milestones (Dupes).

8. Who Should Play and Who Should Skip?

  • You should definitely download GFL2 if: You are a die-hard fan of tactical masterpieces like XCOM, Valkyria Chronicles, Fire Emblem; love realistic military weapon design combined with sharp anime art; and want a game where positional thinking and tactical reflexes matter more than pressing auto buttons.
  • You should consider skipping it if: You only want a light, casual gacha game, dislike reading complex skill descriptions, hate calculating every movement step on a grid map, or only own a mid-range phone that cannot handle high temperatures.
