Mushoku Tensei makes Rudeus's attempt to rebuild his life compelling, but its treatment of his violations of other people's boundaries makes that growth harder to accept.
A morally objectionable protagonist can still be at the center of a worthwhile story. The question in Mushoku Tensei is how the audience is asked to understand Rudeus Greyrat's wrongdoing. When does the story make him confront the hurt he causes? When does it turn attention toward a joke or his own distress instead?
That distinction matters more than a list of his worst actions. A story about a second chance needs to show how someone learns to live with other people. Finding work, falling in love and having a family do not automatically mean learning to respect their boundaries.
A second chance does not erase the person he was
Rudeus begins his new life with the memories of a man who had withdrawn from society. The original web novel introduces his promise to take life seriously and avoid repeating his regrets. That promise creates a clear expectation. Readers want to see what he will change when he receives opportunities he once lost.
He learns magic, becomes a tutor and gradually builds relationships. His memories also carry attitudes toward women that he has yet to change. His young body cannot explain away every action as harmless curiosity. The story has made clear that his inner life is more complicated than his physical age.
Adding the ages of his two lives together does not settle every question about the character either. What matters in a particular encounter is what Rudeus understands about the other person and what choices he could make. When he knows an action is unwelcome and continues anyway, his responsibility becomes harder to dismiss.
This tension is worth exploring. Viewers can understand his fear and loneliness while objecting to how he treats others. Sympathy has greater weight when the story does not ask its audience to forget the people he hurts.
Comedy can soften the impact of a violation
In chapter 14 of the web novel, Rudeus finds Eris asleep in a stable and touches her without consent. The narration follows his joking thoughts before she retaliates. A violation is placed within a familiar comic rhythm of provocation followed by a beating.
Eris's resistance establishes that she does not accept his behavior. Yet that response does not resolve the problem if the scene treats the blow as its comic conclusion. A reader may remember Rudeus getting hit more readily than Eris being denied control over her own body. A scene can contain punishment and still appear to trivialize what prompted it.
Chapter 18 of the web novel takes a different step. Rudeus recognizes that he put his desires ahead of Eris's feelings and apologizes. A criticism should acknowledge that moment. Claiming the story never recognizes his wrongdoing would overlook something it explicitly includes.
After his self-reproach, however, his thoughts turn toward anticipation of future intimacy. In OtaHub's reading, that shift makes the apology feel less secure. Has Rudeus understood the boundary he crossed, or has he learned to wait for a reward? His subsequent behavior is a better test than an apology alone.

Paul's family makes forgiveness complicated
Episode 4 of the first anime season puts the Greyrat family in crisis when Lilia's pregnancy is revealed while Zenith is also pregnant. Paul is the father. Rudeus intervenes to help Lilia remain in the household, and the family continues living together after the crisis.
Several responsibilities overlap here. Preventing Lilia and her child from being sent away is meaningful. It does not remove Zenith's hurt or make Paul's betrayal less serious. Describing only the survival of the household would overlook what its members have been asked to bear.
There is also no need to treat all of Paul's good qualities as false once his infidelity is known. Someone can care about their family and still seriously harm them. That reading makes the character more complicated while requiring the story to address particular responsibilities rather than sort everyone into good and bad people.
For Rudeus, this household offers a chance to see the distance between affection and conduct. Loving someone does not guarantee treating them well. Judging his growth therefore also requires attention to what the people who remain beside him must compromise or endure.

The future diary gives his decline consequences
In chapter 155 of the web novel, the diary of Rudeus from an alternate future records his decline after Roxy's death. During a period of heavy drinking, he meets a sex worker at a tavern and sleeps with her at an inn.
The consequences are central. In this future, grief over Roxy drives Rudeus to push Sylphie away. The encounter hurts Sylphie, and his family reacts to what he has done. This is a collapse with real losses, carrying a different tone from the comic harassment early in the story.
Placing those approaches beside each other makes the criticism more precise. Mushoku Tensei can write about a distressed person remaining responsible for the harm he causes. That ability makes its earlier, lighter treatment worth questioning. The inconsistency concerns how seriously different actions are treated.

Aisha's after-story needs its own context
The Aisha and Ars controversy concerns the web after-story and must be distinguished from evidence about the anime's direction. In his February 10, 2016 post, Rifujin na Magonote acknowledged limitations in his handling of the story and questioned whether it belonged in that after-story. He also recorded both approval and criticism, so describing the audience as unanimously opposed would be too broad.
On February 24, 2016, he announced the removal of the Aisha section after revisions and a platform notice concerning a breach of its terms. Both posts appear on his Shosetsuka ni Naro activity page. They concern a particular web version and do not automatically describe every later edition.
This case adds an important limit to a sympathetic reading. An intention to portray flawed people does not ensure that every situation will be handled convincingly. Readers still need to consider how clearly the story presents power, choice and harm. An author's explanation helps establish an intention, while the writing itself remains open to criticism.
Another view of Rudeus’s growth
Collecting only Rudeus's wrongdoings would miss why readers might care about his journey. Chapter 6 of the web novel shows that he remains afraid to leave home after reincarnation. Roxy takes him outside for his magic examination. A new life does not instantly cure an old fear, but practical help from another person can make change possible.
That is a persuasive foundation for a story about starting again. Talent cannot solve every difficulty, and a promise to try needs to become action. Readers can find hope in someone who was once trapped gradually learning to participate in life and form relationships again.
That attachment also helps explain why someone can enjoy the work while remaining uncomfortable with Rudeus. Appreciating its treatment of fear, loss and family does not require approving of his violations. Equally, rejecting its handling of those violations does not necessarily mean missing its theme of growth.
Conclusion on Rudeus’s second chance
For OtaHub, the less convincing part is the distance between Rudeus learning to have a better life and learning to treat other people better. Those processes are related, but they do not always advance together. The story is strongest when loved ones have a voice and mistakes produce consequences. It becomes weaker when another person's discomfort supplies the setup for a joke.
Rudeus does not need to become perfect for his journey to matter. His second chance becomes credible when change appears in his respect for other people's choices, including choices that conflict with his own wishes. That is where taking life seriously extends beyond wanting happiness for himself.
