1. Europe's Biggest Gaming Kickoff
Gamescom, one of the year's largest gaming events, officially opened in Cologne, Germany. The Opening Night Live showcase delivered a night of trailers, new reveals, and updates on highly anticipated projects. The show carried more than 50 announcements, spanning action, RPG, strategy and horror. It was not a PlayStation showcase; this recap focuses on titles coming to PS5.
2. The Standout Reveals
Remedy Entertainment's Control Resonant showed a new "Altered State" trailer ahead of its September 24, 2026 digital launch. Path of Exile 2 confirmed its full 1.0 release for December 11, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, staying free-to-play. Meanwhile, Metro 2039 from 4A Games revealed its second gameplay trailer, offering a deeper look at protagonist The Stranger ahead of its February 2027 release.
Ubisoft also surprised fans by unveiling Rainbow Six Tactics: an entirely new spin-off of the Tom Clancy franchise that trades the series' familiar tactical shooter format for turn-based, single-player gameplay on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, slated for 2027.
3. Blockbusters With Confirmed Release Dates
Square Enix shared the latest Final Fantasy VII Revelation trailer, revealing the mighty Weapons and showing Cloud and his companions taking to the skies aboard the Highwind. The game is set to launch in Spring 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2 and PC; the April 8, 2027 date was announced afterwards, at the September 3 State of Play. Silent Hill: Townfall from Konami/Annapurna Interactive also turned heads by confirming its English cast, Jovan Adepo, Terry O'Quinn, and Kezia Burrows, in a new trailer, arriving September 24 on PS5 and PC. Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, meanwhile, launched on August 27 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, two days after the showcase.
4. Fresh Projects Worth Watching
Beyond familiar franchises, Gamescom 2026 introduced several unique projects: LEGO Skylines, a cozy city-builder collaboration between Paradox Interactive and the LEGO Group; Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons, a third-person action-adventure set in the D&D universe; and Ananta from NetEase Games, an urban open-world RPG inspired by Shanghai and Hangzhou, launching January 15, 2027.
A few details worth keeping after opening night
Opening Night Live took place on 25 August 2026 at 11 a.m. Pacific time (8 p.m. in Germany). Beyond the titles covered above, the night had a few more announcements worth noting. According to Game Informer, NetEase Games' Ananta is developed by Naked Rain and launches on 15 January 2027 on PS5, PC, iOS and Android. Players take the role of an internet celebrity rebuilding a peacekeeping agency called the ACD, across fictional cities inspired by Shanghai, Hangzhou and Tokyo.
Elsewhere in the show, Rayman Legends Retold got a trailer confirming its 1 October 2026 release, and Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons is aiming for 2027 after its first extended gameplay look.
One small caution: Silent Hill: Townfall's announced release date is 24 September (set at the June 2 State of Play and repeated at ONL), though some sources list 23 September. Before waiting for the unlock, check the launch time on the PlayStation Store for your own region.
