Kuromi will take her first leading role in an animated feature film scheduled to open in Japan in 2027.
Sanrio announced the project on October 31, 2026, to celebrate the character’s birthday. Gaga is handling project planning and Japanese distribution, with release information for other countries to follow.
Kuromi sends a message to her fans
The announcement artwork shows Kuromi waving beside text celebrating her first leading film role. Sanrio also released a video featuring the voices of Kuromi and her familiar companion Baku.
In her message, Kuromi thanks the KUROMIES, the name used for her fans, for their support and invites them to look forward to her new role. The official video is available on Gaga’s channel.
From My Melody’s rival to a leading film role
Introduced in 2005, Kuromi is a Sanrio character recognizable by her black hood and pink skull. She calls herself My Melody’s rival, while her everyday interests include keeping a diary and reading romance novels.
The feature continues her activities beyond character merchandise. In October 2025, she made her major-label artist debut as KUROMI with Toy’s Factory. Sanrio will reveal the new film’s story in future announcements.
